A Flourishing Future: St. Mary School Celebrates the Graduating Class of 2026

<p class="editor-paragraph"><br></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><img src="/images/2fe0e02d-d9bf-499b-9d65-ad072829d6ae?fingerprint=ppb20260622172733" alt="IMG 1933" width="281" height="374" style="width:281px;height:374px;display:inline-block;float:right"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">It was a week of celebration and reflection for the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division as it hosted its third graduation ceremony of the season. On Thursday, June 18, St. Mary School in Taber officially said farewell to its Grade 12 Class of 2025/2026, sending them off with a wealth of community blessings, faith-filled wisdom, and high hopes for the future.&nbsp;</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">The milestone event was guided by this year's poignant scriptural theme from Job 8:7: </span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><i><em class="editor-text-italic" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">“Though your beginning was small, your future will flourish indeed.”</em></i><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">&nbsp;</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">The graduation festivities began at St. Augustine Church with a beautiful Mass celebrated by Father Philip and Deacon Brian Kinahan.&nbsp;</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Addressing the graduates, Deacon Brian delivered a powerful message centered on purpose and connection. </span><i><em class="editor-text-italic" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">“You are the salt of the earth,”</em></i><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"> he reminded them. </span><i><em class="editor-text-italic" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">“Not just for yourself, but salt makes better everything it touches.”</em></i><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"> He challenged the graduates to carry a six-part mission into their next chapters:&nbsp;</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><img src="/images/cc98dafc-077b-4c6e-b791-cfe72266a170?fingerprint=ppb20260622172922" alt="IMG 1723" width="443" height="330" style="width:443px;height:330px;display:inline-block;float:left"></p><ol class="editor-list-ol"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem"><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Stay connected</strong></b><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"> to your faith, community, and the people you came with.&nbsp;</span></li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem"><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Use your gifts for others</strong></b><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"> rather than keeping them to yourself.&nbsp;</span></li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem"><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Choose love on purpose</strong></b><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">, especially in difficult moments when your light is needed most.&nbsp;</span></li><li value="4" class="editor-listitem"><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Stay close to God</strong></b><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">, for in disconnection, the light fades.&nbsp;</span></li><li value="5" class="editor-listitem"><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Stay original</strong></b><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"> and true to who you are.&nbsp;</span></li><li value="6" class="editor-listitem"><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Make sure the people around you shine, too.</strong></b><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">&nbsp;</span></li></ol><p class="editor-paragraph"><i><em class="editor-text-italic" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">"Whatever happens, don’t let your light go out, and don’t try to do it alone,"</em></i><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"> Deacon Brian urged.&nbsp;</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">The celebration continued with inspiring addresses from school division leadership. Linda Ellefson, Chair of the Board of Trustees, extended her warmest congratulations, reminding students that their greatest moments of flourishing are yet to come. </span><i><em class="editor-text-italic" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">"Carry the wisdom of your teachers as you pursue your dreams... Be who God intended you to be,"</em></i><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"> she said.&nbsp;</span><img src="/images/4cdbeeab-36ae-4dc9-b76a-73f0f3d9af5b?fingerprint=ppb20260622173158" alt="IMG 1786" width="334" height="295" style="width:334px;height:295px;display:inline-block;float:right"></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Superintendent Chantel Axani spoke to the growth of the graduates, noting that everything in life starts as a small seed. Through the Holy Spirit community, these students have built a prosperous foundation rooted in Christ.&nbsp;</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><i><em class="editor-text-italic" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">"You possess resilience, grace, and a divine purpose to bloom wherever God plants you next,"</em></i><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"> Superintendent Axani said, expressing how incredibly proud the division is of this graduating class. </span><i><em class="editor-text-italic" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">"You will always be St. Mary and Holy Spirit alumni—let love, service, and community be your compass. Pointing to the unwavering support of parents, teachers, coaches, and clergy, he reminded them that </span><i><em class="editor-text-italic" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">"Jesus will always be your ultimate guide no matter where your road leads."&nbsp;</em></i></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><i><em class="editor-text-italic" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">"The doors are open, your tank is full, and the road is yours,"</em></i><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"> Mr. Van Uden concluded.&nbsp;</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><br></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><br></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Valedictorian Nigel Linatoc then took the stage, dedicating the core of his speech to gratitude. Nigel encouraged his peers to face life's inevitable obstacles head-on. </span><i><em class="editor-text-italic" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">“Let life hit you as many times as it can, and when it gets tired, hit it right back,”</em></i><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"> he said. </span><i><em class="editor-text-italic" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">“Take control... graduating is like waking up to a new day on a bigger scale—be excited for what’s to come. Remember the past but don’t dwell on it. St. Mary School Students Honoured at the 2026 Taber APEX Youth Awards

<p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">On June 17, 2026, the Town of Taber celebrated the incredible young people in their surrounding community who consistently go above and beyond, dedicating their time to service and leadership. The Holy Spirit Catholic School Division is immensely proud to announce that two of our outstanding students, McKayla Paul and Shailyn Kromm, were recognized at this year's APEX Youth Awards.</span></p><h3 class="editor-heading-h3"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">McKayla Paul – Grade 12 at St. Mary’s School</span></h3><p class="editor-paragraph"><img src="/images/dd391ce1-4ff4-4366-a7ef-5743f905a79b?fingerprint=ppb20260618175818" alt="McKaylaPaul" width="190" height="241" style="width:190px;height:241px;display:inline-block;float:left"></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">McKayla was nominated this year for her exceptional ability to balance a rigorous academic schedule, consisting of nine grade-level courses alongside two college-level courses, while remaining deeply committed to outside volunteer and service roles.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">As a natural role model, McKayla practices the leadership skills she teaches, always creating engaging and enjoyable environments for her peers. For the past two years, she has managed the St. Mary’s School Instagram page, designing beautiful and impactful promotional materials for the school community. Carolyn Siemens Appointed as Associate Principal of St. Mary School

Ms. Siemens, who currently serves as the Acting Associate Principal, brings over two decades of experience and a deep-rooted connection to the St. Mary’s community.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">For Ms. Siemens, St. Mary’s is more than just a workplace—it is home. An alumna of the school herself, she has seen her own children follow in her footsteps, with her daughter graduating last year and her son currently attending.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Since joining the staff in 2004, Ms. Siemens has taught a diverse range of subjects across all grade levels, including Social Studies, Physical Education, Religion, Language Arts, and Foods. Her impact extends far beyond the classroom; she manages the school’s social media, coordinates the breakfast program, and leads the travel club.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><i><em class="editor-text-italic" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">"St. Mary’s has a special place in my heart,"</em></i><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"> says Siemens. </span><i><em class="editor-text-italic" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">"I have always been invested in our community. The gym has always been my happy place, and I enjoy cheering on all of our student-athletes. I am looking forward to serving in this new leadership role where I can work closely with staff, students, and families to ensure students receive an education rooted in faith."</em></i></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Ms. Siemens holds a Bachelor of Arts (Social Sciences) from the University of Lethbridge and a Bachelor of Education from the Master of Teaching program at the University of Calgary.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Her leadership is characterized by service, both within the school and the broader Taber community. In addition to her professional role, she remains deeply committed to her community through her ongoing volunteer work. She currently serves as an active member of St. Augustine’s Parish, supports the Taber Titans and the Municipal District of Taber Sports Hall of Fame, and dedicates time to the Taber Food Bank.&nbsp;</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">An avid traveler and hiker, her energetic approach to life is mirrored in her spiritual life. Holy Spirit Catholic School Division Names Josh Van Uden as Principal of St. Mary School

<p class="editor-paragraph"><br></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><img src="/images/41056e92-e3f6-4245-97f4-922b876a1e97?fingerprint=ppb20260514134815" alt="Principal and AP 1" width="405" height="233" style="width:405px;height:233px;display:inline-block"></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">The Holy Spirit Catholic School Division is pleased to formally announce the appointment of Josh Van Uden as the Principal of St. Mary School in Taber, effective for the 2026/2027 school year.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Having served as the Associate Principal at St. Mary’s for the past five years and as Acting Principal over the last four months, Mr. Van Uden brings a wealth of leadership experience and a deep, personal connection to the school community. His career with the division includes teaching roles at St. Francis Junior High and Father Leonard Van Tighem, where he also served as an Associate Principal. With experience spanning Grades 3 through 12, Mr. Van Uden possesses a comprehensive understanding of the diverse developmental and academic needs of all students.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Mr. Van Uden’s academic background reflects a commitment to both organizational excellence and spiritual leadership. A devoted educator in Catholic education, Dominique has faithfully served the division for 36 years as a teacher at St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek. Throughout her career, she has dedicated herself to nurturing the spiritual, academic, and personal growth of her students, embodying compassion, excellence, and faith-filled leadership.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Associate Superintendent of Faith and Learning, Aaron Skretting, praised Dominique’s dedication stating,</span><i><em class="editor-text-italic" style="white-space: pre-wrap;"> "Each year, Catholic educators from across our province receive this prestigious award in recognition of the significant contributions that they make to Catholic education. Mr. New will assume his role in August 2026. Bringing a strong background in teaching and administration, he is excited to return to the Our Lady of the Assumption community and continue supporting student success through faith-filled leadership and collaboration.&nbsp;</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Mr. New holds a Master of Education in School Administration, a Bachelor of Education with a major in CTS Business, and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with a minor in Management. His experience in Kindergarten to Grade 12 education has allowed him to develop a collaborative and community-focused leadership style grounded in service across multiple school settings within the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division. We foster reconciliation through listening, accompaniment and recognition of the ongoing impacts of the past and we will deepen our understanding of our collective responsibilities as Treaty People. “These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another, render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace.” (Zechariah 8:16)
