Celebrating Academic Excellence Across Our Schools

Over the past months, our school communities came together to celebrate the annual Academic Awards Nights at various schools throughout the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division. These events highlighted the remarkable achievements of our students and the dedication of the teachers who guide them each day.

Academic Awards Night is more than a ceremony. It is a tribute to hard work, curiosity, and growth. Students at every school demonstrated a strong commitment to learning through quality teaching. Their achievements reflect the hours spent studying, asking questions, supporting classmates, and striving to reach new goals.

Schools across the division shared messages of pride and gratitude as they celebrated student success. A Season of Reflection, Story, and Community in Holy Spirit Catholic Schools

Advent is an important part of our Catholic tradition, and it is also a time that invites people of all backgrounds to slow down and reflect. In the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division, Advent is a season of story, preparation, and connection. Stories shape how we understand the world. They help us appreciate our traditions, our families, and the many experiences that make each school a unique community.

The four weeks of Advent focus on hope, peace, joy, and love. These themes speak to people in many different ways. They guide classroom activities, school events, and the way we support one another. They also connect with our division priorities, including strong relationships to Catholic faith, inclusive school cultures, meaningful learning, and a sense of belonging for every child.

The First Sunday of Advent highlights hope. The first purple candle is a reminder that hope can steady us during busy or uncertain times. In our schools, hope is seen when students encourage one another, set goals, and try again when things are difficult. Hope is part of how we build confidence in our learners.

The Second Sunday of Advent focuses on peace. The second purple candle invites us to think about how we create calm and respectful spaces. Peace shows up in the way students solve problems, the way staff support school routines, and the way we care for one another. Peace helps us create safe, welcoming schools for everyone.

The Third Sunday of Advent centres on joy. This week is marked by the rose candle. Joy can be quiet or energetic, personal or shared. In our division, joy is found in learning, teamwork, friendships, and moments of celebration. When students feel confident, supported, and valued, joy grows.

The Fourth Sunday of Advent leads us to love. The final candle reminds us that love can be shown in many ways. It can be kindness, patience, service, or simple acts of care. In our schools, love is seen in the way staff guide students, the way classmates support one another, and the way communities respond when help is needed.

Throughout the Advent season, the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division will share stories on social media about how students explore these themes in their schools. These posts may feature classroom projects, artwork, community service, or small moments that highlight hope, peace, joy, or love. Our goal is to show how these values are lived out in meaningful ways.

Each week, we will also share questions and activities that families can try at home. These prompts are simple and flexible. They are meant to spark conversations, encourage reflection, and help families explore what these themes mean to them. We welcome families to share their own experiences in our post comments and use the hashtag #hs4Advent in Facebook and Instagram.

When we share our stories, we learn from one another, and we strengthen our sense of community.

Advent invites us to pause, to reflect, and to notice what matters most. We look forward to walking through this season together, and we thank our Holy Spirit Catholic School Division families for the many ways they support our students and staff.

Celebrating Our Caretakers on National Custodial Workers’ Recognition Day

Today, on October 2, we join schools, hospitals, and organizations across the country in recognizing National Custodial Workers’ Recognition Day, a day dedicated to appreciating the incredible work of custodial staff.

At Holy Spirit Catholic School Division, our caretakers do so much more than maintain and clean buildings. They are a daily part of school life, sharing smiles with students, lending a hand in unexpected situations, and reminding us all that care for our community often shows up in the little things.

This year, we are proud to share a few stories that highlight just how much our caretakers contribute to the spirit of our schools:

Gil Balmes, St. Paul School, Lethbridg

During his morning rounds on September 17, Gil noticed two students, Chino and Betty, carefully repairing an OKI sign that had fallen from the school’s chain-link fence. Opening Mass 2025 Hero Image

Holy Spirit Catholic School Division Opens the 2025/2026 School Year with Faith and Purpose

Today, the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division gathered at Catholic Central High School East in Lethbridge to celebrate the annual Division Opening Mass. The celebration marked the beginning of a new school year rooted in confidence, faith, and a shared mission to educate. His Excellency, Bishop McGrattan, presided over the Mass, offering words of inspiration and challenge for all gathered.

Drawing on the example of St. John the Baptist, Bishop McGrattan reminded staff and clergy of their sacred role as Catholic educators and leaders. Like John, who always pointed beyond himself toward Christ, we too are called to guide students to the Lamb of God with courage, humility, and steadfastness.

“We have the privilege of pointing out the Lamb of God. We have the privilege of introducing students to Jesus Christ,” Bishop McGrattan said. He invited staff to see themselves in the role of evangelization, courageously presenting the gospel in a world that often presents what is not true. His words called for a deep sense of humility and conviction: to serve first, to witness to the truth, and to stand firm in faith, even when facing challenges.

Following the Mass, Superintendent Chantel Axani addressed staff with gratitude and encouragement for the year ahead. She acknowledged the exciting growth of the Division, highlighted by the construction of St. Kateri elementary school, as well as the daily dedication of all staff across 16 schools. With honesty, she recognized the uncertainty and challenges of the times, while calling everyone back to the heart of their mission: the students.

“Our students are the heart of everything that we do, and they are counting on us,” Chantel reminded staff. She called the Division to embrace the new three-year faith plan, Open Wide the Doors! Sent to Share Christ’s Love, with renewed fire and unwavering faith.

Her message was clear: in every role, from classroom to bus route, office to playground, each act of service is a living expression of Christ’s love. As a Division, we are called to be welcoming, to be a light, and to actively open our doors to share Christ’s love through both words and actions.

Together, the Opening Mass and Superintendent’s address set a confident and hope-filled tone for the 2025-26 school year. One grounded in truth, inspired by humility and courage, and united by the mission to bring Christ’s love into every classroom and community.

Dr. Boschee holds a PhD in Educational Research from the University of Calgary, where her work focused on Indigenous ways of knowing and place pedagogies. She also holds a Master of Education, a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Lethbridge. Over her 25-year career in education, she has served in multiple schools across the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division, including at St. Mary (Taber), St. Basil, St. Paul, and St. Teresa of Calcutta. Most recently, she served as Associate Principal at Children of St. Martha School in Lethbridge. I do feel the weight of it, but it’s a sacred weight. I draw intention and grounding from the words of Siksikaitsitapi scholar Dr. Betty Bastien, who describes the concept of kiitomohpiipotokoi—what you have been put here with (or responsibilities). Bastien writes: [My responsibility] in a cosmic world is to use the gifts given to me by the alliances and to live the teachings of respect and kindness by showing reverence to the simple and profound things in life. This quote reflects the way I understand being a teacher—as both a calling and a commitment. It reminds me that at its heart, this work invites us to be present, to carry hope, and to make space for joy and connection in our learning."

“I am excited to welcome Dr. Boschee to the Niitsitapi team in Holy Spirit,” states Mr. Aaron Skretting, Director of Religious Education at Holy Spirit. “Her depth of understanding and practical experience as a student-focused leader, dedication to excellence in student learning in an inclusive environment, and focus on humility in relationships will serve our students and staff well as we continue living truth and reconciliation.”

"It is with immense joy and confidence that I welcome Dr. Jana Boschee as our Divisional Principal for FNMI Education,” says Ms. Chantel Axani, Superintendent of Schools for Holy Spirit. “Dr. Boschee possesses a remarkable gift for building authentic relationships, a quality that is truly invaluable in education. Dr. Boschee genuinely lives out and believes that children who are cherished achieve their potential, and we are incredibly blessed to have her leadership guiding our students and staff at Holy Spirit Catholic School Division."

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Boschee as she begins this exciting new stage of her career at Holy Spirit.

Not only are they the early morning risers, they are also the after-school supporters, bringing lessons to life, guiding with compassion, and sparking curiosity and wonder in the minds of our students on a daily basis.

But behind the scenes, there is also an extraordinary team of superstars whose tireless efforts help make Holy Spirit vibrant and alive. Alongside our teachers, this hardworking crew makes each day truly special at every one of our schools.

From the education assistants, library technicians, office administrators, and many more, our support staff keeps our day-to-day life running smoothly. Be it lending a hand in the classroom, helping students and staff stay organized, or just offering a kind word and a smile, these heroes are the heartbeat of our schools.

An example are our Holy Spirit counsellors and wellness team members who are always nearby with an open door and an open heart. Not only do they help our students navigate their ever-changing emotions, they create a safe, caring and inclusive environment for students and foster a culture of care and connection.

Our custodial and facilities staff are the stewards and caretakers of our buildings. You may not always see them but they are always around, keeping our schools and buildings safe, clean and cared for. Be it rain or shine, snow or windstorm, they are our behind the scenes champions.

It is also important to highlight the invaluable work of our First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) team, whose cultural guidance, educational support, and deep-rooted wisdom help us walk the path of Truth and Reconciliation together. Their hard work when it comes to language lessons, sacred teaching, community events, and everything in between, reminds us that our faith and learning are deeply connected to who we are and where we come from.

Let us not forget our principals, associate principals and board office staff whose dedicated efforts bring vision, leadership, and faith-driven focus to the forefront. Whether they are advocating for their school or department or leading student-centred activities, they set the tone for our community, all while juggling a thousand moving pieces on a daily basis.

Behind the division is a group of dedicated individuals working quietly but powerfully to guide our mission and vision: our Board of Trustees. As faith-filled advocates for the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division, and Catholic Education, our trustees help shape policies, make key decisions, and ensure our schools remain strong, inclusive, and focused on student success.

Each role - no matter how visible, many of which have not been named - plays a vital part in contributing to the soul of our school communities. This work matters deeply; it’s what makes Holy Spirit Catholic schools the warm, positive and compassionate places they are.

To each and everyone of our behind the scenes heroes: Thank you for creating spaces where students feel seen, heard, and supported. Thank you for filling our hallways with laughter, love, and learning. And thank you for showing us all what it means to be a community rooted in faith, where children are cherished and achieve their potential.
